Most of the beginners in the photography field focus only on the specifications of the Camera and often forget the importance of a decent lens and the wonders it can do. Aperture is the feature that tells you about the amount of light that gets through to the sensor of the camera. The higher the amount of view, the better it will capture images in the night and other darker conditions. Aperture is generally provided as an aperture no. Like f/2.8 (or sometimes smaller than this). The lower value of the aperture means that more light will pass to the camera. The aperture no. Between f/2.4 and f/3.2 are considered to be the aptest no. That gets the job done well. Also, the high number of the lens results in the price drop of the lens.
The telephoto lens is often found to have large aperture no.s, whereas the zoom lenses are found to have two aperture no.s. For, e.g., f/2.8-5.6, the smaller no. of the aperture indicates the amount of light you get with the widest angle, while the more massive no. Shows how much light you arrive at the maximum zoom.
The focal length is one of the most crucial factors when looking for a new DSLR lens. The focal length is measured in millimetres and specifies whether the lens is a wide-angle or telephoto.
Wide-angle and telephoto, both have their up and downs. The telephoto lens, the zooming capabilities are far superior to its counterpart. The portrait is one of the specialities of the Telephoto lens as they protect the facial proportions better than a wide-angle lens. But one of the drawbacks of the telephoto lens is their susceptibility to blurriness and lower brightness during the shoot due to the slightest camera shake. It is not easy to handle a telephoto lens due to its big size, but with the right tripod, this hurdle can be jumped over with ease.
The wide-angle lens is a perfect fit for nature photography due to their exceptional performance in brightness, and they also provide the depth of field. They are comparatively smaller in size than telephoto lenses, which makes them easy to carry and are easy to handle too. However great they may be in nature; they are surely not quite cut for the photography of humans. This is due to their impression given by the wide-angle, which makes it look like the distance is farther than in reality.
The mixture of both telephoto and wide-angle is called a Normal Lens. This lens renders the environment as we see with our own eyes. Everything with a smaller focal length is called a wide-angle, whereas more extensive focal lengths are known as telephoto. The standard lens is 50mm in a 135 format.
Fixed or Zoom?
A question arises, which lens should one go for? A fixed lens or a zooming lens. Well, different people require different things from their lens. My money is on the Zoom lenses, as they come with several focal lengths. Zoom focal length always has two focal lengths, for example, 18-55mm.
Whereas, the fixed lens has some advantages as well. Fixed lenses are smaller and lighter and usually have better brightness than zoom lenses.
Some orthodox photographers think that using zoom lenses gives them an unfair edge over the others, and consider the fixed lens as the right lens for artistic purpose.
Color Refractive Correction
Do you remember the physics experiment where we use a prism and see the phenomenon of refraction? In this experiment, we concluded that different types of lights move through the prism differently from different angles. Similarly, different colours of light bend individually when they pass through a lens, which creates a problem for the lens designers. To counteract this, manufacturers use a low dispersion glass. The optical image stabilisation is a common thing to be found in most of the DSLR cameras; significant manufacturers continue to put image stabilisation in their products. This is done by moving the elements in the lens, which in turn removes the camera shake. Most of the famous manufacturers such as Sony, Canon, etc., use image stabilisation in the camera body. Some examples of the manufacturers using image stabilisation in the camera body with the abbreviations are:-
- Nikon- VR
- Canon- IS
- Sony- Image Stabilization in the Cameras
- Pentax- Image Stabilization in the Cameras
Just like every time you make a typo in your texts, the autocorrect comes to the rescue, saving you from immense embarrassment. Similarly, some lenses have an autocorrect of their own that helps you to take better pictures. For instance, while taking images of an object that is at a higher height than yours, you will tilt your camera upwards, which in return will make the purpose look thinner from the top and thicker from the bottom. The lenses with perspective also have the option to change the focus plane so that you can improve or worsen the depth of the field. Like-
